Squeeze the Day!
The tail of last week ended how Sunny likes - with everyone talking about her.
The cardiac surgery team discussed her case again - this time with the updated report that her heart's function had decreased since their last conference about her.
They had tried giving her some medication to increase the function. Sunny's heart wasn't declining on it, but it also wasn't improving. In the condition that her heart was in, the surgeon did not want to perform any heart operations, as he believed she wouldn't recover. They gave us a few options as far as next steps, but none of them were glowing courses of action with everybody's seal of approval.
One of the choices was to try regulating some of the blood being sent to her lungs. The stent placed to make up for some the irregularities of her heart, was keeping her alive which is good, but it was doing too good of a job. It was speculated that it was allowing for too much blood to be sent to her lungs, and that was adding stress/extra work to her heart.
She hadn't responded to the meds given thus far, so they weren't hopeful the options would help because they were beginning to believe the decreased function was related to her Trisomy diagnosis.
One of the members of the team asked them to try one other medication, and they did. Just a few hours later, they already saw a difference! The relaxation was no better, but the squeeze was improving! This encouraged them enough to believe that it was possible for her heart to improve in function.
So, first thing Monday morning, Sunny went back to the Cath Lab for another procedure. Even though the team here had not yet done this exact procedure yet, Sunny was in the trusted hands of the team who had placed the stent, and had also done the heart catheterization for pressures just a few weeks ago.
The flow restricting procedure went well, and all the doctors were, and continue to be, happy with her numbers since placing the device🙌🏻. Now, we wait! She'll get an Echo on Monday to monitor the function, and we'll go from there.
After the procedure, they upped some of her ventilator support, but have already begun bringing that back down.
She's been a tad fussy this week, but her blood pressure is already better.
She's still the toughest lil trooper during all her trach care and changes. This week, her parents changed her trach for the second time, and are nearing the end of their trach education classes!
Specific prayer requests:
- Continued improvement of Sunny's hearts relaxation & squeeze!
- Wisdom & guidance for her team & her parents.
Thank you for praying and caring for this little warrior. She's such an immense light in our lives, and feel so incredibly blessed to get to be her parents! We feel so well loved through this season, and are very grateful.
Love,
Chris, Alyssa & Sunny
